Probably the most quiet island of the Florida Keys is Big Pine Key. It is far enough away from the landbased tourist destinations that this area pretty much is forgotten to most visitors. Locals actually like it this way, especially fishing guides. This is an area that many guides from around the keys fish on their days off to get away from the daily grind of fighting for fishing spots in other parts of the keys. During Tarpon Fishing Tournaments you will actually see many guides drive 120 miles by boat to fish this area to give them an advantage over other competitors because the fish have a tendency to eat better than other parts of the keys. |
| When you get to the Lower Keys area of Big Pine you are actually closer to Cuba than you are to a Walmart. Yes, Big Pine Key is very quiet and remote it still has everything an angler needs during his stay. There is a grocery store, drug store, local restaurants, and a few resorts to choose from. Not to mention a few nice tiki bars to have a cocktail at the end of the day with some pretty 'entertaining' locals. |

Big Pine Key is also home to some more furry friends as well, the Key Deer. We have a polulation of about 800 of these minature white tails roaming freely. They are so tame that most locals view them as pets and have been seen walking into stores and houses when the doors are left open. Many visitors passing through will drive around the island in hopes for being able to snap a quick photo of one. In reality the morning and sunset hours are prime time to spot them. But be careful when driving here because every year we loose 30-40 due to running out in front of cars. |
