Key West Flats Fishing Boat |
Key West is the southernmost island in the Florida Keys. It's just a small island with about 60,000 locals, most in the tourism industry. Key West is home to some "Out of this World Permit and Tarpon Fishing." You can target these fish as well as many other species found in the area using light tackle spinning rods and fly fishing outfits. Flats fishing guides generally target these species when they enter onto the shallow water flats to feed. These flats are gin clear constantly filtered by the nearby Gulf Stream. This is what makes them ultra spooky and sometimes difficult to hook. This is why hiring an expert guide is the key to your success. |
| Key West Permit fishing can be great all year long. Here you can see Don with a nice Permit in the 25 lbs range that was taken using a live crab. This fish was tailing in water that was less that 10" deep. During certain parts of the tide this can be an often occurance. They are primarily a deep water species that will scour the flats in search of crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs. Anglers with a good pair of polarized sunglasses and an accurate cast can hook into this species and expect a fight of their life. Often times over a 20 minute fight on 10-15 lb light tackle rods. |
