Spectacular Day On A Marathon Fishing Trip With Dave

Canadian fish nut Dave has been fishing with me for several years now.  This time he decided to bring his son down for some backcountry fishing out of the middle Florida Keys area of Marathon.  Over the years we’ve fished together for pretty much everything we have around here.  He’s caught several Goliath Grouper well over 200 lbs. as well as Tarpon over 100 lbs.  But by far his favorite thing to catch is Sharks.  So into the Marathon backcountry we went in search for the largest toothy critters we could find.

Oh boy did we ever find them.  Dave and his son actually set one of my personal records by landing 47 large Sharks during one single trip.  We probably could have caught more but after that many I had to put it to a stop because not only was I exhausted from retying leaders and releasing fish for them but they were also wore out from the long drag screaming fights.  All of the fish we caught were Lemon and Blacktip Sharks sightfished up on the flats in about 3 feet of water.

During this trip we started out catching large Jack Crevalles on a Rapala Subwalk on 10 lb. light tackle spinning gear.  After we had a bunch of these in the well the tides were just right to chum up the sharks with the carcases of the Jacks.  This is what Dave looked like on the way home.  And no, he’s not faking it.  He’s out like a light!  If you’d like to book a Marathon fishing trip like this just drop me a line.  Thanks much to Dave and see you in a couple months buddy!!
