Florida Keys Light Tackle Fishing Options: Marathon, Florida

There are many different techniques and gear used  to catch fish in the Florida Keys.  By far the most common gear used are light tackle fishing rods.  This type of tackle is easy for anyone to use and really makes catching fish sporty.  They are spooled up with monofilament or braided lines with break strengths of 8-50 lb. test.  These light tackle fishing reels can be used for casting, bottom fishing, trolling, and even kite fishing.

While light tackle fishing you can use a number of different baits to catch fish.  The most common baits we use are artificial lures, live bait, cut bait, and dead bait.  What kind of bait we use is determined by the species we are trying to catch, time of year, and generally just how the fish might be acting that particular day.

Our light tackle rods range in size from shorter 6′ rods for trolling to our longer 7’6″ rods for casting lures and baits farther distances.  For example, if we are trying to stalk a Bonefish on the flats we try to keep the boat far away from the fish.  This is so we can’t be detected and spook the fish.  This why we will want to use longer fishing rods to be able to pitch the live shrimp or crab to the fish to be more effective.

Inshore species – Mangrove Snapper, Yellowtail Snapper, Mutton Snapper, Grouper, Triple Tail, Cobia, Trout, Jacks, Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Bonefish, Permit, and more.

Offshore Species – Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Kingfish, Wahoo, and more.
