Post Hurricane Irma Fishing has been spectacular. We were very lucky with our boats and docks being unharmed. The storm hit the Florida Keys on September 10 and we were back up and running by the end of September. Ever since then the fishing has been some of the best we have ever seen. There is very little pressure on the fish because a lot of boats have not returned to the water so the fish are a lot dumber than normal. Here is a nice Amberjack that was caught on a live bait on a wreck in about 200 feet of water. This was one of about 8 we caught that day. There have also been a lot of Jack Crevalle’s and Yellow Jacks hanging around the edges of the flats. Usually I like to throw Rapala lures at them and sightfish for them in shallow water. It’s an explosive bite and the bonus is the Yellow Jack is one of the few jacks that are really good to eat. Some of the other good eating species we’ve been catching are Mangrove Snapper, Mutton Snapper, Yellowtails, Groupers, and Cobia. I’ve had a great time spending time with my customers afterwards at the Island Fish Company Restaurant having them cook our catches. The Giant Mutton Snappers have been hungry as well on some of the patch reefs as well as the offshore wrecks. These fish put up one heck of a fight on light tackle spinning rods. Usually we drop down live Pinfish or Ballyhoo to catch these monsters on 50lb. light tackle spinning outfits. If you are able to get down here to the Florida Keys now is the time to catch the fishing at some of the best it’s been in a very long time.
