Fishing Report : Red Hot Fishing In Marathon
The fishing in Marathon is red hot here in the Florida Keys. On the calmer days we have been venturing just outside the reef fishing wrecks in 150′-250′ ft. of water. Here’s Darcy with one of the several Amberjacks he caught while live baiting on a 50 lb. light tackle spinning rod. These fish are one of the hardest fighting fish pound for pound because they are in the jack family. Most of the fish we see here in the Florida Keys are 30-40 lbs. but can sometime grow over 100 lbs. Because these fish pull so hard we call them “Reef Donkeys.” One of the other really fun species we catch here in the Florida Keys you don’t really hear much about is the American Red Snapper. Probably the reason they aren’t talked about is because they are a protected species of Snapper that is catch and release only. Years ago Biologist believed the numbers had dwindled so low from over fishing that they felt they should be protected. Fast forward several years the numbers have bounced back Statewide and people are starting to talk about reopening the fish for recreational anglers. Most of the time we promote catch and release whenever possible for our fishery so there will be plenty of fish for future generations to catch. Every now and then we have customers that would like to take some fish home for a meal or two while they are here in town. (Not Fill Your Freezer) Here you can see one of our regular customers Bobby that had a really great time catching a whole mess of Yellowtail Snapper and Vermillion Snapper. If you would like to keep some fish to take with you please let us know so we can plan accordingly. We will gladly filet the fish for you a bag them at no additional charge.
