Juvenile Everglades Tarpon
The month of July’s fishing in Marathon and the Florida Keys is full of diversity. One day you can chase Tarpon on the flats of the keys and the next you can be diving for lobster anywhere in South Florida. Keep in mind July is a hot month for us down here so diving is not such a bad idea. This month was filled with all kinds of good stuff. A couple days I ventured up to the Florida Everglades area of Flamingo and caught some juvenile Tarpon and Snook on Fly. And I even spent a few days lobster diving for the Spiny lobster during the opening of the season at the end of the month. We even had a few mornings of chasing Bonefish and Permit in the backcountry of Marathon. All kinds of stuff is available in July

Just like usual these fish are eating shrimp, pinfish, crabs, and even flies. You just have to take note of whatever the food source they are accustomed to eating in that particular area. For example, if your targeting Tarpon on the fly in the remote waters of the Everglades you wouldn’t select a monster sized fly because they are so use to eating bugs and other small critters that fall in the water back there. Always take note and I know it sounds cheezy but “be one with the fish.”
Diving / Snorkeling On The Reef
Another great thing happening in July in South Florida is the warm water Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) fishing. These warmer temps and calmer water make targeting Dorado really productive. Probably one of the best months all year is July for Dolphin fishing. These trips are offshore trips and are generally 6-8 hours in length. 4 hours isn’t quite enough time for this style of trip. If you only have time for a 4 hour trip and want to go offshore I would recommend doing like a reef trip for Yellowtail Snapper, Mutton Snapper, and Grouper. All of these species are biting great during the month of July.
