Awesome Yellowtail Snapper Fishing

This last Winter and Spring the Yellowtail Snapper bite was awesome. We targeted these tasty fish in 55-95 ft. of water on the outside edge of the reef. Most of the fish we were seeing were 15″-25″ long. On 12-17 lb. test line they put up a great fight. This type of fishing is great for one of our shorter charters lasting 4 or 6 hours. On our full day trips we would usually target Yellowtail Snapper for a few hours and then move to a different location to target other species.

This is one of the groups we fished this last Spring. They wanted to bring just enough fish back so they could eat fresh fish while they were in town. Most of the restaurants in town will cook your catch. The Island Fish Company Restaurant where our boats are located is one of the best spots in town on the water to do this. They will cook your catch 2-3 different ways and serve it family style with 2 sides so everyone can eat as much or little as they want.

Yellowtail Snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus) is found widely all over the Florida Keys. For some unknown reason Marathon, Florida seems to have some of the biggest ones in the keys. If there is a strong current on the reef you can bet we will recommend fishing for yellowtails. The Yellowtail Snapper season is open all year long. The minimum size to keep in 12″ tail length. We usually try to keep fish 15″ and larger to allow the smaller one’s to spawn more. If you want to keep enough for a few meals while you are in town we will gladly clean and bag them for you.
